He’s making a fast recovery and might get to go home tonight. But also, Jesus Christ, people. I think a quick refresher of the first rule of Oppo is in order. Some of those replies last night were needlessly judgmental and harsh. But I kind of get why a lot of you got the wrong impression, so I’m going to clarify some things:
1. They are suing for the medical bills. It is not a money grab or anything.
2. He didn’t step over the line until he already slipped. The oil was spread up to and over the foul line.
3. He stumbled over a sticky spot, which is a major hazard in bowling. There is a reason the shoes only have grip on the heel; your feet are supposed to be able to glide along the floor during your approach. Bowling shoes would not have flat leather soles if they were meant to grip.
4. Yes, slipping is an accepted risk in bowling. But when it is made much more likely by improper maintenance, that’s something different. Say you got hit by a hockey puck that passed through a missing pane of glass; sure, flying pucks are an accepted risk of the game, but that would still be the arena’s fault for increasing the risk and not giving prior warning.
5. Again, it’s not just a greedy “blame someone else” mentality - we watched him slipping well before the line and watched the manager mop up all of the oil that was in front of the lane as soon as she could - if nothing else, a clear admission that it was there beforehand. My uncle is going to owe several thousand dollars to the hospital for this, (and he’s self-employed, so he has absolutely no income for these few days) and it was due entirely to the bowling alley failing to clean up a hazardous floor. He’s not trying to come out ahead or make money off of this; he’s just trying to keep this from bankrupting him. The bowling alley needs to take responsibility for the incident and use this as an opportunity to better train its employees about the importance of keeping the floor safe.
6. So, yeah. I agree that people in America sue everyone way too often, but you’re assuming that people ONLY sue for ridiculous reasons. The real issue here is the fact that a person’s life can be ruined by hospital bills for an injury that is clearly not his fault.

If the oil was before the foul line, a lawsuit is justified. I think a lot of people assumed he had gone over the line and slipped, which would have been on him.

Glad I was not part of the storm, but I agree. Glad to hear he’ll be okay.
I’ve only sued one person once and it was 75% medical bills/long lasting injury, and 25% replace my the 3 months pregnant wife’s car, you stupid Camry driving cunt who turned left in front of us thinking she had a green turn arrow when she had a green light.
Now I know why those blinking yellow turn arrows are all the rage.

Yeah, that’s why I wanted to clarify it. Even if the oil was behind the line, this particular company has actually been sued before, a result of which is that they need to leave 6" between the foul line and the oil. It’s almost as if this particular franchise did that completely opposite.

We are currently in the middle of a pair of major lawsuits ourselves. One of them was my brother getting hit by a drunk driver, which permanently damaged his wrist. The other was my dad being rearended by what we can only assume was a texting semi driver, which gave him a permanent headache and nearly ruined his neck. Both of them are likely to net some serious damages because of the damage being permanent and ruining quality of life.

Sorry you have to go through something like that. Never fun to be in the hospital waiting for news of a loved one after an accideent.
And yeah, I have realized that anytime you post something on the FP or even oppo now, people make assumptions about anything you didn’t say and then judge you on what they made up. Hopefully the shit storm dies down soon enough.

Whole situation sucks and I’m glad your Uncle is on the road to recovery.
I’m also sorry that our OPPO brethren broke rule #1 last night. Very uncool of them indeed.
Good luck with everything and I hope he’s back up and going soon.

Go read his post, hardly a shit storm. Any of those people’s comments could be corrected by telling them that the lawsuit is for the medical bills because the truth is medical bills can ruin someone financially and since we don’t have a proper national health system in America it ruins many people’s lives daily.

But why should he have to correct them in the first place? Why was it the first thing everyone did was assume they wanted a frivilous lawsuit? Why did everyone immediately assume the bowling alley was likely not at fault?

I’m happy to hear that your uncle is doing better, that is the most important part.
I’d sleep over the idea to sue someone. No need to do quick decisions while you are still under emotional distress. But if you decide to sue, go for the company not the individual working there. How much does a person working in a bowling alley make? “Try reaching into a naked man’s pockets.” Even if you win the lawsuit, good luck getting the money in a timely fashion so that it actually helps your uncle pay his medical bills. The company however...
Also, I remember that you worked retail, imagine somebody sued you over a milk spill you didn’t mop up soon enough.

Everyone didn’t assume that, just those people. He doesn’t HAVE to correct anyone, he’s grown. Hell if it were me I wouldn’t give a shit and wouldn’t have addressed it in this post. People assume the worst, that is how people are and getting worked up about it is a pointless waste of energy.

I disagree, actually. I don’t think it is the norm for people to have that sort of behavior. I think it is a problem that people need to correct about themselves because that is an excellent way to get yourself into trouble. Granted, people are much faster to talk back over the internet, but I don’t believe in treating people online that much differently than in person.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking. I'm 26 and I'm DONE with trying to change people and the way they go about things. I've learned that I can only change myself and I can't worry or stress how other people conduct themselves, it used to drive me crazy now it doesn't.

Yeah, I don’t mean just an individual employee. I worded it weirdly the other night. I just mean that I’m certain it’s not the company’s fault, but just the specific franchise. So they would be suing the place, not the person, but it would be represented by its manager and/or owner, I assume.
But yeah, it’s excellent that he’s better! He actually got discharged a few minutes ago and is finally back at home. Even though it was just about 24 hours, it’s been quite a crazy couple of days.
